What is Antimonium Tartaricum (Tartar Emetic)?
Common Name: Tartar Emetic, Tartrate of Antimony and Potash

In olden times, it was used as a powerful emetic. In homeopathy, it is one of our best remedies for states of intense nausea and chest affections where mucus accumulates but cannot be expelled.
Clinical Conditions Where It Is Used
In homeopathy, Antim Tart is clinically thought of in:
Alcoholism, Aphthae, Asphyxia of newborn, Asthma, Bronchitis, Catarrh, Chicken-pox, Cholera, Cholera morbus, Cough, Croup, Laryngitis, Pneumonia, Whooping cough, Small-pox, Varioloid, Myalgia, Lumbago, Stiff-neck, Rheumatism, Synovitis, Tremors and Paralysis agitans, Skin complaints like Ecthyma, Impetigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm.

Key Characteristics - Why Antim Tart Is Unique
1. The King of Rattling Chest:
This is the keynote. Great accumulation of mucus in the chest with coarse, loud rattling on breathing, but the patient is too weak and drowsy to cough it out. The chest feels full of mucus.
2. Intense Nausea and Vomiting:
Nausea as intense as Ipecac, but the nausea is relieved after vomiting. Constant nausea felt in the chest. Vomiting with great effort, sweating on forehead and trembling.
3. Drowsiness, Prostration and Pale Face:
Face is pale, sunken, or bluish. Great drowsiness, even stupor and coma with difficult breathing. Child wants to be carried and cries if anyone touches it. Breathing is stertorous.[cyanotic]
4. Skin and Small-Pox Like Eruption:
It produces eruptions like small-pox – pustules as large as peas filled with pus, leaving scars. It was historically used as a substitute for small-pox vaccination. The terrible backache of small-pox is very similar to Antim Tart back pain. It is also considered a sycotic remedy – e.g., warts at the back of glans penis.
Important Mind and General SymptomsMind: During day hilarity, in evening anxious and timid. Peevish, whining, quarrelsome. Child will not allow itself to be touched. Lethargy and despair. Consequences of anger and vexation – e.g., child coughs when angry.
Head: Heaviness, especially in occiput, as if brain contracted into a hard mass. Trembling of head and hands, worse in evening and from heat.
Tongue: Thick, white, pasty coating with red papillae showing through – a very characteristic tongue.
Stomach: Constant nausea, empty retching, sobbing risings. Sensation of stones in abdomen when sitting bent forward.
Back: Violent pain in sacro-lumbar region. Slightest effort to move causes retching and cold, clammy sweat. Sensation as if a heavy load is hanging on the end of coccyx dragging downwards. One of the best remedies for lumbago.
Modalities – What Makes It Worse or Better
Worse [<]:From warmth, warm drinks, lying warm in bed
At night, especially cough at 4 a.m.
From damp and cold, from anger/vexation
On sitting down, sitting bent forward, lying on affected side, from motion and every effort to move
From being touched or even looked at
Better [>]:From sitting erect, from cold air, from eructation, from expectoration[burping]
A characteristic posture in lung affections: Patient lies with head bent back and neck stretched out.
Relations with Other Remedies
Similar to: Ipecac in nausea, but Antim Tart has more drowsiness and rattling; Bryonia in pneumonia; Opium in drowsy cough.
Antidoted by: Opium in large doses is the best antidote in poisoning, also Ipecac, Pulsatilla, Sepia.
Follows well: Phosphorus, Pulsatilla, Terebinth.
