Home Remedies for Enlarged Prostate

Enlarged prostate or benign prostatic enlargement happens when cells in the prostate abnormally divide and multiply, causing the organ to increase in size.
Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a disorder that generally affects men 50 years of age and older. BPH is not the same as prostate cancer.
The prostate is a small, muscular gland (in the shape of a walnut) in the male reproductive system. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder and adds fluid to semen to allow sperm mobility.
With age, the cells of the gland begin to multiply, leading to an enlarged prostate. Although the exact cause is unknown, changes in male sex hormones with age may be a factor.
It occurs when the prostate enlarges to twice or even three times its size, pressing against the urethra and resulting in restricted/ obstructed urine flow.
As a consequence of this obstructed flow, lower urinary tract symptoms manifest.
In Ayurevda, prostate enlargement is known as parush granthi shoth. This problem is mainly due to the imbalance of vata dosha. Imbalance of dosha occurs due to the consumption of spicy foods and other food products which can cause the aggravation of pitta dosha also.
